Description
A family of dapple gray quarter horses in pasture.
In case you are wondering why the foal is grulla instead of dapple gray, it's because there is no such thing as a dapple gray foal. Graying in a horse is similar to graying hair in a person. They are not born with a gray coat. They gradually gray with age. So all foals are born with some other horse color, such as black, bay, chestnut, buckskin, etc, and start turning gray when they are a year or two old. They usually start out darker gray, often with "dapples" and then eventually fade until they are nearly white by the time they are 8 or 10 years old.
Btw, a truly white horse is very rare. Most "white" horses you see are dapple grays that have faded completely. You can tell the difference by the skin color. The skin of a "white" gray horse usually has dark skin. A true white horse will have pink skin.
